We did an afternoon charter on the Escapade. We decided to check the point with Mile Buoy as a fallback; seas were very snotty so we turned around and did our favorite fallback. As usual, the top 50 feet or so looked like a layer of green vomit, but the bottom was very clear (well over 50') but dark - almost like diving in a large cave.
Highlights included lots of large lings, several nice vermillion rockfish, our own personal squid to keep us company during the deco and a small wolf eel.

Where did we go on this dive - I have no idea, but it was superb!
Mark wanted to see the Cannery Point wall area on the outer left side of Whalers Cove. The last time I did the same route it was on scooters with JT leading, and he led us way too far over to the right, ending up in the back of Coal Chute Cove! I wasn't going to make the same mistake this time :-)
We dropped in at the back of Whaler's Cove in brown murk, but as we headed out on the Gavins it soon cleared up to nice blue water.
I was leading and my plan was to pass Cannery Point and then veer left towards the Cannery Point Pinnacles, but I must've started veering left a little too much and apparently crossed to the left of the pinnacles into Bluefish Cove.
I kept trending left hoping to pick up the wall and so we crossed somewhere out into the middle of Bluefish cove. Eventually we came to the outer edge of the kelp bed in about 80' of water, by which time it was obvious that we were way too far to the west. So we followed the kelp edge further west to where it led to a group pinnacles.
And when I say pinnacles I mean Pinnacles. These were very pretty pinnacles of the classic pinnacle-shape (tall, thin and pointy) covered in Corynactus, Hydro-Corals and all the other colourful stuff. As we scootered out through them we reached 100' depth with the bottom down below us probably at about 120'. Visibility here was stupendous - probably 60-70' of clear blue water.
Were we still in bounds? - I have no idea, but it was great.

Wanted to dive Bluefish Cove because I had never been there before. Bad day for it, surgy mess. Dropped on the east wall of the island on west side of the cove, swam north for a while, couldn't see jack, then swam east to a small pinnacle in search of deeper water and better vis, things got a little better but not much. Mostly an excersize in navigation (I'm getting better - really! ;-) Best part of this dive was we surfaced quietly near the boat without Phil noticing us, snuck up behind him while he was reading a book - then suddenly hollered and pounced on rear of the boat - scared him out of his skin. Muuuahahahaha...! |

Nick and I played hooky from work today to get some pre-T1 practice in together. I'm learning that Phils's axiom "deeper is better" is pretty much true around here. Despite rough sea conditions the night before that left things stirred up at beach sites and a murky surgy layer to about 50', from 60 down to 150 things settled down and vis opened up BEAUTIFULLY. Phil dropped anchor on top of the pinnacle at about 60', Nick ran line from it down a sheer wall straight down to 140' and we had a leisurely swim along southeast side of the pinnacle. Lots of areas to explore if you wanted to go deeper, we just hovered and took in the big picture. Usual suspects plus lots of nudibranchs everwhere, notably a large Dirona Albolineata and small Spanish Shawl (I love those), (ID courtesy Metridium.com, thanks Clinton!), also some pretty red Gorgonians. Had some adventures at our gas switch. As Nick was about to shoot the bag, his primary reel started spewing line everywhere. It got to be a mess and we ended up have to cut the line just to button it down. We manged to deal with this SNAFU in good trim, get bag off smoothly in good team formation and stick to schedule so we felt pretty good about things. |

Pete and I had some time to kill so we stuck around for another shore dive. The Carmel sites were blown out so we ended up back at Breakwater and decided to try and navigate out to the barge. On Delia's advice we swam at 50 degrees from the beach until we got to 60ft deep, then ran a search pattern with a reel looking for it. Didn't find the barge, but we did surprise a rather large halibut and found a small dive light that someone had lost. Turned around and swam back in along the wall. Visibility was sort of OK out deep but really deteriorated in close to shore. |

The boat had to anchor broadside to the swell so we were getting tossed around pretty well on the surface. And there was a surface current running so we just did a free descent off the stern instead of swimming up to the anchor line. This dive was mostly skills practice: more gas sharing, some no mask work, and then staying in team formation while ascending under a lift bag. |

Surface conditions were too rough to go around the point so we did both dives in Monterey Bay. Visibility was terrible at the surface but opened up to be reasonable at depth. At the bottom we tied in a reel and headed out toward the north along the reef. Lots of metridiums. Coming back to the anchor line we ran into some of the other divers so we hung around waiting for them to pass and did some more gas sharing practice. Even though we came back to the anchor line we sent up a marker buoy for practice. |

We dove today at a location that's new to me, straight off Whalers Cove outside the park. Beto calls the place 'Montana' as it's a big rocky plateau in the middle of nowhere, near the Carmel Canyon dropoff! He's been here before on a looong scooter run from Whalers, but dropping right on it allowed us to spend a lot of time looking around.
This is a large area, and very scenic. The surroundings remind me of E3, that's how good it is. We took some scenery images to share, as you know what they say: "If you didn't shoot it or tape it, it didn't happen!". :-)
The surface conditions were rough on the way out and back, and the color of the water looked terrible (like coffee) from Monterey to Cypress Point. In Carmel Bay the water turned blue, it was sunny and the visibility here was excellent (50-70ft). Water was quite cold, I saw 48 degrees throughout the dive.
We saw life very similar to other deeper sites around Lobos, including Vermilion rockfish, lings, and big schools of Blue rockfish. No unusual nudibranchs this time, but the sponges here were great. A great day out! |
