Five of us made the recreational boat on Dec 8th. Ian, Devin, Clinton, Mark, and Gary. We took at look at the point to see if the conditions permitted us going over to Carmel but the wind and waves were picking up so we opted for Ball Buster instead. The water didnt look too bad and after we anchored Gary and I dropped down about 10 feet and immediately a Mola Mola motored right by us on its way to become a seal snack. The bottom conditions were pretty good with hardly any current or surge and about 20 feet + of visibility. Lots of the Metridiums were out, along with a few schools of Rockfish, Painted Greenlings, Ling Cods, Crabs, etc. Gary and I went around the pinnacle once and met up with the second team taking a few pictures of a very tiny wolf eel in a hole. Around we went for a second time then attempted to find the anchor which we were unsuccessful at. I put a bag up and began a nice slow ascent while checking out the jellies on the way up. Many of them had the small fish in the tentacles, which is pretty cool. We met another Mola Mola and a pair of sea lions danced and blew bubbles at us near the surface.

Once back on the boat we motored to Shale Island. After our 1 hour surface interval was up we dove back in and found the vis to be equally good at Shale. We followed the lip of the island and immediately came upon a red octopus hunting for its dinner and right next to it was a nice yellow headed fringehead. We kept finding these red octopus all along the dive. At one point two of them were fighting over a small piece of squid which was attached to a fishing lure. As Gary and I followed the island all the way round we spotted a large lingcod with the tail of a small wolf eel sticking out of its mouth, that was unfortunate but cool non the less. Great diving, Clinton has already posted some pictures at: http://baue.org/images/galleries/v/local/RecBoat_12_8_12/

We were half expecting this charter to get cancelled due to inclement weather but luckily Jim and Matt decided to press on. Monterey Bay was flat calm and we were able to get in a nice dive at Mile Buoy reef. Visibility was excellent down to about 90ft with thousands of sea nettles (ouch). It got a little silty down near the reef but not too bad. We saw a basket star on a gorgonian, some nice large ling cod, and a good variety of rock fish. Dead mola molas littered the reef; they picked a bad spot to prey on jellyfish with so many sea lions around. The deco turned out to be the best part of the dive as we got to hang out in the clear water watching the sea nettles and sea lions. Dionna and I had a little confusion on the ascent since my depth gauge consistently read about 4ft deeper than hers.

We were on the BAUE Tech 1 charter. Swells, wind, and fog prevented us from going south so given a choice between Mile Buoy and Kawika's we picked the latter. Pictures are in the album linked below.

The BAUE rec boat stayed in the bay at Aumentos and Hopkins Deep. We had some great conditions and sea life encounters, so I just wanted to share the photos and videos from the dives. The viz at Aumentos was excellent, though there was a stiff current that kept us all warm. Rob and Clinton posted some great pictures. We retreated to Hopkins Deep for dive 2, in hopes of avoiding the current, which we did. The viz there was not quite as good; it was clear on top but somewhat murky near the bottom. On the bottom, we saw two molas, one of which let us hang out with him for a while, and the other was on the big end of the molas that we see around here. During our ascent, we were visited by a group of curious sea lions, which stayed with us for pretty much the entire ascent. I posted a video of this dive. It just goes to show you can have some awesome dives even when the weather is not great! My full dive report is here.

Thanks to John Heimann and Carol Fields for organizing the event.

Saturday's tech boat made it down to Dos Gatos, where we found amazing viz, insane fish encounters, and beautiful surface conditions. We also did a second dive at Flintstones, where I saw more of the site at once than I've ever seen. Erik and I were videoing, and Rob was taking pictures (macro, sadly), so I just wanted to share them with everyone.

The weather was looking great for once and I could finally get rid of the helium mix sitting in my 130s. Unfortunately John H. teased the weather gods by guaranteeing good weather. The very next day the weather report turned nasty and we were all cursing John. The call was made to go anyway and see for ourselves. Down at the dock things looked good so we set out with Erik, John, Allison, Jim, Doug, and myself. It was a bit rough getting out of the bay but once outside things calmed down all the way to Lunaticos. The teams jumped in and Jim and I decended down with my left ear complaining all the way to about 120. There I had to stop and persuade it a bit before continuing down to 200. The water clarity was very good with about 80 feet all over at the bottom. We scootered around following the ridges north and south which were richly covered in gorgonians, 20 or 30 vase sponges, schools of juvenile rockfish, and hydrocoral. After what seemed like minutes we ascended to our second level and spent another short interval scootering around the structure and enjoying every second. Deco was uneventful till we reached the 20 foot stop and had to avoid the monster sized jellies. Once on the surface the crew grabbed our bottles and the chicken massacre began. Trying not to push our luck we headed back to the bay and some did a second dive near Shale Island. All in all a great day and we were all glad we called the weather gods bluff.
