	  Was able to get myself a spot on the T1 charter today :-). I was supposed to dive with Jim and Joakim but they both cancelled so I buddied up with Nick. We dropped down at the Nixies to find 60ft of visibility and a lot of invertebrates and fish. We navigated the north Nixies first, and then headed south. We then followed the reef East and ended at the shallow spot on Los Gatos at about 80ft. There were tons of lincods and many vermillion near Los Gatos and we had one Mola hanging around at the top of the pinnacle and it visited again during the deco. 

We skipped the second dive in favor of getting clean and heading to the Xmas party :-)

	  On Friday I was able to take Gary for a Lobos tour. That's not very easy to do as he knows the area very well
but after getting his T1 rating there was new territory for him to cover. We meet at the parking lot at 9:00am as I had a phone meeting at 12pm, and we quickly gear up and went diving. 

The visibility at the cove was not the best but the moment we got to HTW vis opened to about 60ft and we had at least 100ft in the Twin Peaks area. We saw dozens of large lincods. They came in different colors: black, brown and grey. We found a nice basket start and several others nudibranches hanging on the gorgonias. 

On the way back we hanged around rock-garden for a large portion of the deco, and we saw a large school of blues and a nice Mola.

Good to be able to take Gary on some new territories ;-), and I was only 10min late to my phone call :-)

	  Tuesday I completed the T1 “experience dive”. This was a week after Jon and Teresa completed theirs.  Last week I was totally exhausted after 7 days of diving it 8 days.  For the experience dive I buddied up with Susan and we set off on the Escapade for E3 – just outside of Point Lobos. The seas were dead flat, no wind and the sun was peeking through broken clouds. Stunning.  We dropped into truly blue water and descended to find the twin pinnacles of E3 in full view. Vis was over 100 feet.  E3 is “Elephant  Ear Edge” and it certainly is. Spaced about 4 feet from each other are EE sponges, literally everywhere.  Between them are gorgonians and corynactus, etc. I was blown away. There is nothing like this in the recreational range.  We circled the NW pinnacle at 150. Beto found a beautiful snail on a gorgonian.  Up close was amazing but conditions drew the eye to the visas. Looking up above the pinnacles was clouds of rockfish and as we rounded the NW end a Mola cruised by checking us out.  We moved up and over to the top of the second pinnacle, thumbed the dive and headed up.  Deco was easy and totally relaxing enabling us to look around and take in the occasional life in the water column. Then at 30 feet, four  to six good sized Molas showed up and did the ballet for several minutes.  Magic!  On the surface and to home with several stops to attempt swimming with the Rizzos.  They were everywhere!

	  Met in the Breakwater parking lot for tasty treats and boisterous conversation with other BAUE members. It was great to see new faces, familiar faces, and finally put faces to names. After we had our fill of cookies and humus we convinced ourselves we were *actually* there to dive. Fofo, Oleg, and I formed a doubles team and hit the water about an hour after dark. We descended at #7 along the wall to some better than expected conditions (~15ft viz and few jellies). We kicked along the wall/sand interface to about 40ft - along the way I saw a China rockfish and a pair of young Bocaccio, among many other sub-adult rockfishes. We were followed by a black harbor seal, using our lights to forage. At 40ft (20min) we headed North into the sand into a garden of sea pens. Over the sand were many dozens of octopi! Also came across a large pleurobranchus californicus and even larger sea hare. We mosied back toward the beach, passed over some low-relief reef covered in sub-adult rockfish. Highlight for me was spotting a Thornback Ray in about 15ft of water - a first sighting for me! We surfaced in 10ft of water right where we entered - perfectly planned and executed dive!

	  Jo, Jim and myself together with the BAUE group had a great dive at Ed Cooper Walls. We dropped at about 130ft, motored West to find the end of the wall and dropped down to about 200ft. Vis was really bad all the way to 130ft, but past that was really good. At least 60ft vis. We enjoyed seeing all the big lings and rocks fish. After about 20min of fun we located a large canyon that crossed the wall in half. Torwards the end of the canyon there is a nice ledge which is usually full of fish. We saw several large Vermillion, China Rockfish, Tree fish and many others.

We headed back to the wall to look for the pair of wolf eels that are usually at 120ft but vis was so bad shallow that we gave up and called the dive.

	  Andrew, Greg and I dove the west today at Lobos. I am working on building up visual memories of the previously un-mapped territories to prepare for painting the model. On our way we visited "the sisters". I believe the lore passed down when I started diving Lobos was that there were 3 sisters. Even though I have been there many times I have never resolved -- if there are three sisters, which ones were the actual three -- because there are really 5 structures of various sizes in the vicinity. I suspect that Beto or JT or Alan actually named the structures. So Beto, how many Sisters are there and which ones are which? I numbered them 

Conditions today where highly variable. Inside of 40' vis was about 8'-10. HITW was 20. Sisters were 70'. and most of the path to the west was 50'. We explored some new territory that is in the area of the dotted line on the path followed. The line follows a very narrow and deep crack between to parallel bluffs, opening to very cool areas. Parts feel very cave-like. We looped around the bluff and returned to the opening and then transited over to the East face of Marcos Pinnacle. The channel to the south is very narrow and opens to a cave-dark open area. At the South is a pinnacle that breaks the surface that is shaped like a Mayan Pyramid. Andrew, Suz and I visited and circumnavigated it several months ago in stellar conditions that permitted seeing the whole shape. In front of it is a smaller structure, beautifully decorated that we circled around. At this point we called the dive and returned to the Whalers.

For a day with very low expectations it was extremely nice.

	  Went diving at Lobos for the first time in a while. It was  not as clear as we wanted but nice enough to swim out to the Sea Mount and then do some skills practice/video with Paul :-)

The high-light of the dive was a huge sheep crab, and a very strange looking orange nudibranch on the kelp at the surface. I wish it was Summer Camp day so I could put both of them in the bag ;-). I'm sure we'll run into them next week...

	  Inspired by high-amp-hour, trigger-heavy, heated-vest-happy Team Gavin gearing up slowly in the lot, and also by the fantastic conditions of late, Greg and I endeavored a scooter worthy kick dive.  First stop was Garys Rock Garden.  A long overhead carpet of young blues ushered us through the doors.  Inside, the blues carpet kept unfolding just below the kelp covered surface.  Looking up, the kelp was translucent against bright sunshine and the blues took on a shimmering glow.  Dramatic sun-shade contrasts generated a spectacular kaleidoscope of colors on the magnificent maze of reefs.  In spots it was raining YOY.  

Our extended range mission plucked us from the Garden and we kicked our way back towards the Cove.  Once Lone Metridiums white Q-tip emerged we headed north to Sea Mount, where we encountered Lings dead and alive.  From the northern edge of Sea Mount Betos was in sight and beckoning, so off we kicked.  We rode high along the ledge and took in the stunning panoramic view.  Upon reaching the end of the second segment of the reef chain we turned back.  Bouncing off Sea Mount we headed over the two tires and straight into the bright and blue Sand Channel.  Bag shoot at the Worm Patch and valve drill off the ramp wrapped up a perfect dive.

	  Erik, Doug and I did a dive on 420 today (no, not that kind of 420, I'm talking about the date, of course).  We were the only team on the BAUE  Boat today, but were all happy to get in water considering the streak of bad weather we've had the last couple months.  Although fog and rough seas confined our dive choices to the Bay, we had good training conditions (15' vis and totally dark water at the bottom, 1' vis on deco) and saw some interesting nudibranchs on the dive.   These included a large Tochuina tetraquarta munching on a gorgonian, and an enormous (at least 12" long) Pleurobranchia Californica out on the sand a bit north of the reef.

	  Andrew, Suzanne and I converged on Whaler's Cove hoping for better conditions that previous weeks. The wind forecast was bad. The rec boat was cancelled but the surface conditions in the morning looked much better than Friday. 

We planned to get as close to GP as we could based on viz. We provided a towing service to from the ramp to HITW for Fofo and Jiri.  Viz was 25 (instead of 5 -10 like it had been during the few weeks. We struck off to Great Pinnacle following the 85' contour and made it in under 10 minutes. Viz was spectacular. At 90 feet the surface was visible as was the kelp on the structure. I couldn't see bottom on the north (160') side but the bottom on the Blue Fish side with visible at great distance. 

After one lap, we followed the east side of Marcos Pinnacle up the "the pass" and crossed west into Blue Fish's shallows, turned and returned home.  

The water was VERY cold at 46 degrees. I think the wind has driven the upwelling and delivered clean, cold water to the open areas. WIthout long period swell the deep water vis is quite nice. 

A beautiful dive.
