Kawika's Gorgonian Garden -- [View this location only]

Access: Boat Level: Advanced
Access Information: A boat diving spot on the deep shale in Monterey Bay.
Terrain: Reef Avg Depth: 115
Max Depth: 130 Min Depth: 105

A shale reef with a lot of structure including cracks, knobs, overhangs and large mushroom shaped rocks. Kawika's Gorgonian Garden is as advertised covered in lush red gorgonians. Several of the larger rocks have nice patches of Metridium anemones and there are some very nice yellow sulphur sponges as well. This site has incredible fish life including big vermilion and canary rockfish. Unfortunately it also has a significant amount of manmade debris and fishing line. This spot was discovered by Kawika Chetron in 2006 by looking at bathymetry data.

This is another pinnacle in the E3 complex. It's a few hundred yards west for E3 and Deep E3. This pinnacle has particularly nice gorgonian coverage on the top. The sand on the north side is at about 210-220 and maybe 180 on the south side.
Lake Tahoe, Rubicon Wall -- [View this location only]
Region: Unspecified GPS Coords
Access: Beach Level: Intermediate
Access Information: Rubicon Wall is accessible from D. L. Bliss State Park, about 10 miles North of the city of South Lake Tahoe on Route 89. Entering D. L. Bliss State Park, there is a day-use entry free. Also the park is closed during the winter. See www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=505.

If you are on scooters or doubles, park at the Lester beach. If on singles, park at the Calawee Cove beach overlook and walk down the stair/trail.

From Lester Beach, the point is straight East, bearing 90-100. It is much closer from Calawee Cove beach, but of course you're going to have to climb down and back up the cliff.

Terrain: Pinnacle,Rocky/Boulder Field Avg Depth: 100
Max Depth: 800 Min Depth: 5

Beaches themselves are sandy and featureless, except for a few crawdads. The point is marked by a quick transition to rocks and rapid drop-off. Thermocline is between 20-30ft and temperature drops rapidly. Argon is wise.

The slope is much the same as the mountains above, but covered with water. Some trees, but absence of life is notable. Tahoe is a "low productivity" lake. The main feature here is geological - you're coming for the rocks.

Visibility is poor (<50ft) in the spring, when melting snow runoff brings silt into the lake.

Sunlight during the daytime is considerable. A light is unnecessary for viewing, and signaling is difficult.

There is no surge and little wind waves. Towing a dive flag is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED because otherwise you are at risk of being killed by idiots on speedboats and waverunners, who ignore the no-wake flags and drive straight onto the beach.

When conditions permit, this is an amazing site. If you move close to the rocks, you will almost be guaranteed a visit from multiple sea lions. If you are skilled, or whether permits anchoring on the north side, there is some amazing topography there.

Local's ledge is a pinnacle south of Cypress Point. Normally only diveable on fairly flat days it is an excellent dive featuring some of the best hydrocoral in the Carmel area. The topography is also quite dramatic with sheer walls and narrow canyons.

This site is a series of small walls separated by sandy ledges. It is very fishy with lots of lingcod and rockfish. The site is very pretty shallow with nice bull kelp. The site is quite close to shore. It is a very nice R3 dive.

Shaped much like its name-sake. Sits on the shoulder above the dish of Bluefish cove. Lots of giant kelp on its flanks. Easy to circumnavigate. This would be a very nice beginner boat dive in low surge, good vis conditions

Very similar to Hopkin's Deep Reef. Large rocks on a sandy bottom with maybe 10-15 feet of relief. The rocks have large numbers of Metridiums, Cup Corals, Gorgonians and Elephant Ear sponges. There is very little Corynactis and thus it isn't as colorful as some spots in Carmel but it is still quite scenic. Sandy areas have large numbers of Sea Pens.
Monastery North -- [View this location only]
Region: Carmel GPS Coords
Access: Beach,Boat Level: Intermediate,Advanced
Access Information: You generally want to enter the water pretty far to the north side of the beach where you get protection from the kelp. Watch out for the surf since the beach is very steep, the surf zone is short and the power of the breaking waves is concentrated in a small area.
Terrain: Rocky/Boulder Field,Sand,Kelp Avg Depth: 70
Max Depth: 250 Min Depth: 0

This is a cool site with access to almost any depth you want. There's nice stuff in the shallows in the kelp bed, there's a nice boulder area in the 60FSW-100FSW range, and then there's a wall that drops away into a trench.

This side of Monastery is generally more protected and also has bathroom facilities close-by, making it a popular class site.

The depths stay shallower than on the north side. If you kick out quite a ways towards MonoLobo, you will get increasing depth and larger geographic geatures (large rock formations, etc.).
